Summertime Smiles

It’s almost summertime, those days where we light the barbeque, hit the beach and spend long sunny days with friends and family. The summer can also be a great time for your health too, with sunlight providing you with plenty of vitamin D, which plays an important role in your immune system by assisting in the activation of infection-fighting cells.

Summertime also gives your oral health a massive helping hand too, as vitamin D helps keep bones and teeth healthy. Research has even suggested that it can help prevent gum disease.

However as you head out and about during summer, there are some things you need to be aware of if you want to maintain your oral health. Here are our five top tips:

Lip Service

We often overlook our lips when putting on sunscreen, despite the fact the skin on our lips is very thin and easily prone to burn. Protect yourself with a sunscreen made especially for your lips. And make sure to apply regularly.

I Scream

Reaching for an ice cold treat is a great way to cool down, but if you suffer from sensitive teeth it can be incredibly painful. If this sounds like you, opt for a toothpaste for sensitive teeth which can help to limit the pain. Or you could always try a healthy alternative like fresh fruit or vegetables.

Sugar Sugar

Sugar is well known as the enemy of oral health, and soft drinks are one of the worst offenders, especially if you sip on them over the course of a hot day. Water is really the only choice to keep you hydrated and refreshed, and does no damage to your teeth at all.

It’s a Knock Out

We love being outside and active in summertime, but with many summer sports there is always the danger of something going wrong and you could end up cracking or losing a tooth. Wearing a mouthguard can help reduce this risk.

Opening Time

Last but certainly not least, please don’t use your teeth as tools. Opening bottles, packets, or holding things in your mouth can rapidly increase your chances of causing permanent and often painful damage to your mouth.
