We would like to share a story about a patient of Nelson Dental Centre, Sarah Johns. Sarah is a science teacher (and Head of Department) at Nelson College for Girls, and has recently spent two weeks in rural Nepal teaching secondary school teachers. This training focused on improving science understanding and teaching practices. Sarah travelled as part of a programme designed by the Ministry of Education in Nepal to work towards 'Quality Education' for secondary students in the country.
Sarah then spent some time visiting primary schools in rural Nepal. She told us that some of these were hours away from any main roads and not accessible by any vehicle. Conditions were very basic, with no power, no resources, and classrooms made of rock and mud. It was quite a humbling experience for Sarah to view these conditions, and then to work in them.
Nelson Dental Centre provided Sarah with toothpaste and toothbrushes to gift to some of these primary school students. She has told us that the children's faces were 'priceless' when handed a toothbrush and toothpaste. Sarah then led them all in a 'toothbrushing party' and had 73 students from the Shree Sekarsing Lower Secondary School in the Solukhumbu District practising their techniques in the school grounds!
Nelson Dental Centre has a previous connection with Nepal, with our very own Janette having travelled there twice for the purpose of providing dentistry to children.
We hope you enjoy the photos of Sarah's visit to this school in Nepal and we are very grateful to her for delivering our gift to the students.
